Learning the behind-the-scenes details of how wireless networks work and the many tools they can be used for was mind-blowing, especially when the topic of the “Internet of Things” was introduced. I do not currently have a smart home or devices set up in that way, and I feel somewhat cautious about adopting that technology. I believe there is a real risk of smart home devices being hacked, especially when users create weak passwords that are easy to remember. While manufacturers are constantly improving security, not everyone keeps their devices updated, which can leave vulnerabilities. I would need to learn much more about this topic before deciding to use these technologies.
In Chapter 7, Session 7.2, I learned about the various security risks and methods hackers use to gain access to devices. In the spring of 2025, I took a Network Security course where we discussed many of these attack methods. At the time, I did not fully grasp the concepts, and I only remembered some of the terminology. Now, a year later, I find myself much more interested in understanding how and why these systems work. This session helped me better understand both common security concerns and the wide range of attacks used today.
As a result, I plan to review all the security measures currently set up on my home wireless network to ensure we are as protected as possible. I have also decided to avoid using my MacBook on public Wi-Fi networks. In the past, I would see warnings about unsecured networks but would ignore them and proceed anyway. Now, with a better understanding of the risks, I will take those warnings more seriously. I look forward to continuing my learning in Chapter 8.
